High nutrient peptone mix has 33% more malt extract and peptone and is typically used for germination of spores, the higher nutrient also offers additional nutrients to any potential bacterial contamination which might be present in your spore solution allowing you to identify contaminated spore syringes quickly.

If you’ve never used agar before, the short version is that it’s a bit like jelly (it’s a lot like jelly). Mix that together with some nutrients and you’ve got a medium for things to grow on. Mycelium loves it, so do various bacteria and other fungi. It’s also a handy 2D plane, so you can see exactly what’s happening, which allows you to remove the bits you like (put them on another plate and watch it get better and better), and get rid of the bits you don’t like. Science!
Once you’re happy with what you’ve selected, you can throw it into some liquid culture jars, or a bag of grain, and you know 100% that what you’ve got is as pure as the driven snow.
Agar is where you should be aiming for in your mushroom cultivation journey - if you want to grow literal canopies, clone massive mushrooms, or even clean up wild prints then this is how you do it. Learning how to use agar is one of the things Morpheus would’ve uploaded into Neo’s noggin, probably even before Kung-Fu and Bending About In Slo-Mo, it’s just that useful. Try it, learn it, and you’ll never look back.
Ideally you’d use a flow unit with your agar plates as this would guarantee that your plates will remain clear of any extra contaminants in your environment. You can make-do with a still air box, you’re just having a bit more of a gamble. We absolutely do not recommend using agar without one of these two methods as you’ll never know what’s floated onto your plate (although you can do whatever you want, it’ll work sometimes).

Was using for around 2 and a half years untill now, dont know whats happened. Had contamination in the plates before opening from the last few orders, the last having 3 out of 4 packs of 10 contaminated. Sealed packages were opened and found between 1 and 4 months of purchasing with the last looking like it had contam for a long time, like most of that 4 months. I was blamed as they were not used quick enough. Response is quick and friendly, just avoid pre poured agar plates!!!!!

Firstly, I did not blame you for anything. I offered a replacement and gave you information on use by dates as this was from an order 6 months ago.
17/04/2025 - 'I’m happy to refund the original plates which contaminated, just a heads up they should used within two months otherwise they are past their best really.'
Secondly, I offered a replacement (sent 17/04/2025 and followed up 8/5) and you never responded... I never offered a refund.

Agra pot are allways perfect and never seem to have a issue, so at least every time i buy its like it is guaranteed to be okay and each plate is always dentical in terms of colour and how much agar each pot has and overall moisture content.

had these pots now and used to clone a fruit they are great for beginners or even someone who doesn’t have still air box to do this, only one issue is the pots are some times quite unclear to see through but from a community post I’ve seen got they a different pot type from yourself which looked a lot more transparent, if they was like would be even better than they already are, also your tek video on using them was so good and informative thanks again myco
